Description

1. The Complex Geometric Composition
The surface geometry of this 19-inch plate follows the strict, classical layout reserved for high-end Persian masterworks:
The Shamseh (Central Sunburst): The center opens with a beautifully nested, concentric target medallion, which anchors a large, flowing 8-lobed Shamseh (sunburst/star motif).
Interlocking Medallions (Toranj): Each of the eight radiating lobes forms a perfect pointed medallion filled with dense, micro-miniature floral engraving (Khataei) and twisting arabesque vines (Eslimi).
The Guilloché Border: Separating the central field from the wide rim is a highly precise, diagonally chiseled braid or herringbone guilloché border, which provides a clean visual break.
The Architectural Rim: The wide outer rim features a repeating sequence of crown-like arches or scalloped panels. Each panel is independently engraved with a stylized floral bouquet, framed by thousands of micro-punched background dots that give the metal its rich, stippled texture.
2. Materials & Miniature Engraving Technique
Tinned Copper Base (Ghalam - Zani) This piece is executed on heavy-gauge copper that was traditionally coated with a thin layer of molten tin. This old-world technique gives the piece its distinctive, antique silver-gray appearance while retaining the weight and durability of a solid copper base.
True Miniature Relief Work: As seen in the macro detail of image , the level of detail is astonishingly minute. The artisan used incredibly fine steel miniature chisels (Ghalam-e-Riz) to etch microscopic flower petals, tiny leaves, and scrolling lines into the metal surface.
Deep Shadow Contrast (Siah-Galam): The dark, oxidized compound settled in the deep recesses creates an intense contrast against the raised, hand-polished gray highlights. This technique gives the complex flat pattern an illusion of three-dimensional depth.
